Karupu Ulundu Sundal (Whole Black Urad Dal Sundal)

Karupu Ulundu (or) Black Urad Dal is a natural Pre-biotic food..  That is, it can't be easily digested by our normal digestive system.. It requires the  help of stomach bacteria to digest it.. So our stomach ,in turn stimulates the growth of good bacteria to digest the karupu ulundu.. That Good Bacteria  is very good for nutrition.

Karupu ulundu benefits are obtained well by having it as  a sundal..  Its one of the best snacks for the evening time..

Ingredients:

Karupu Ulundu  ( Whole Black Urad Dal)    - 1 cup
Salt                                                                 - As Needed

For Seasoning:

Oil                         - As Needed
Mustard Seeds      - 1 tsp
Urad Dal               -  1 tsp
Curry Leaves        - Few
Grated Coconut    - Optional

Procedure:

  • Dry roast Karupu ulundu (or) Black Urad Dal until it leaves a nice aroma.
  • Soak karupu ulundu in enough water for 1 - 2 hrs. (Soaking in water is purely optional, if you soak in water, sundal will get cooked soon.)
  • After some time, cook the sundal in cooker.. I used to keep the cooker in high flame for 1 whistle, and after that will reduce the flame and keep it for 15 minutes. Open the cooker after the pressure subsides and see whether sundal is cooked.
  • Do the seasoning and add it to sundal along with the salt..
  • Your healthy sundal is ready..
